Frequently asked questions

How do I take part in an auction?

You need a confirmed account and an auction admission, which you apply for in your account. The source of funds is checked and a bidding limit is set. Registration for a specific auction must be made no later than 72 hours before it starts.

Is a bid binding?

Yes. A bid placed is binding and may not exceed your bidding limit including the buyer's premium.

What does a winning bid cost?

The hammer price and any buyer's premium; both are shown for each auction before you take part. As long as the gemstone remains in the bonded warehouse, the hammer price is exclusive of Swiss VAT.

What happens after a winning bid?

At the end of the auction the amount is collected. If collection fails, you receive an invoice with a payment period of five bank business days. After payment the gemstone is transferred to you in the bonded warehouse.

Who am I buying from at an auction?

The symbol on the lot tells you: a gold hexagon with the NOBILITH mark means NOBILITH sells the gemstone in its own name. The outline of a cut gemstone means a consignor is having it auctioned through NOBILITH; the contract of sale is then concluded between you and the consignor, with NOBILITH acting as intermediary. Nothing changes for you regarding bids, payment, custody and delivery.

What do the symbols in the catalogue mean?

Every lot carries one of two symbols. Gold hexagon: property of NOBILITH. Gemstone outline: consigned, NOBILITH acts as intermediary. Tap the symbol or hover over it to see the short explanation. The full legend is in the auction terms (T&C, section 8).

How is the consignor commission charged?

10% of the hammer price, deducted from the proceeds. With domicile or registered office in Switzerland or Liechtenstein, Swiss VAT of 8.1% is included; with confirmed domicile abroad it is charged without Swiss VAT. For a hammer price of CHF 100,000 you receive CHF 90,000 in both cases.

Can I consign gemstones to an auction?

Yes, as an auction partner. After partner registration NOBILITH reviews your details and documents. On a successful sale NOBILITH receives 10 % of the hammer price including Swiss VAT; no commission without a sale. Consigned gemstones are sold only through the auction.
