Glossary
Zambia
Zambia is today the world’s largest emerald producer. Emeralds were discovered in the Kafubu river area in 1928. The Kagem mine is considered the largest single emerald mine; since 2010 most of the world’s production has come from Zambia.
Appearance
Zambian emeralds contain more iron than Colombian ones and usually show a cooler, slightly bluish green. They are often cleaner and therefore need less treatment.
Trade
Much of the rough is sold at auction. Thanks to their composition, Zambian emeralds can usually be distinguished well from Colombian ones in the laboratory.
