Carat
The carat is the unit of weight for gemstones: 1 carat equals 0.2 grams and is divided into 100 points. Laboratories weigh to the hundredth. Larger stones are disproportionately rarer, so the price per carat rises with weight – often considerably for stones of the same quality.
